Traditionally, rehabilitation from injury has been considered as physical in nature, however more and more research is confirming that there is indeed a psychological factor. Many people who are injured may be angry or sad that they are incapacitated, and can benefit from psychological counselling. It has been found that an injury can also elicit feelings of low self-worth, lowered self-esteem and a decreased self-confidence.
Psychological counselling can teach injured individuals coping strategies and techniques to improve self-esteem and self-confidence. Strategies can be employed to help individuals understand their anger or their depression in relation to their injury, and ways to move pas these emotions to a place of peace. If necessary, pain relief strategies can be taught as well as relaxation and emotional regulation
