Anxiety is a normal part of everyday life and in many situations it is reasonable to react with some anxiety. However about 15 – 20 % of the population experience anxiety that is more intense and lasts for longer. Anxiety which affects your everyday life, ability to go to work or impacts social activities is usually a sign that you need psychological help.
Restricting or avoiding situations which cause significant anxiety can result in the problem getting worse over time. While some medications may assist in the short term, the long term way to overcome these disabling symptoms lies in learning new skills to deal with anxiety.
Anxiety can be experienced in many different ways and can occur in many types of situations. What generally causes sufferers to seek help are the physical symptoms such as feelings of tension, difficulty sleeping, trembling or shaking, feeling of nausea, sweating, chest pain, fatigue or fear of going crazy.
Anxiety disorders include phobias or fears in particular situations such as travelling in aeroplanes or lifts. Fear of heights and being in contact with some animals can also cause high anxiety. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder are also classified as Anxiety Disorders.
Agoraphobia suffers fear having a panic attack in public where escape seems difficult. These individuals fear subsequent embarrassment of such an attack which increases anxiety. Anxiety can occur when you are in noisy crowded places, confined spaces, travelling on public transport or standing in a line waiting. Not having a person with you who makes you feel safe may result in being unable to leave home or to feel anxious being home alone.
There is no one cause of anxiety but research has shown that some reasons lie in genetics, previous stressful events, and personal belief systems. Research has also found the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in all its forms can significantly help to challenge irrational thoughts which cause people much unnecessary worry and anxiety.
