Many people will witness or experience a frightening or distressing event and be able to walk away from it. However, there are many that won’t be able to, and will experience emotional trauma as a result.

They may find that they have difficulty coping or functioning in day to day life, they may find that they have trouble sleeping, are easily startled, or emotionally numb. They may find that they have a greater number of physical aches and pains than normal or they suffer from repeated, intrusive memories of the event.

These symptoms all point towards ongoing emotional trauma. Help should be sought if the symptoms are too distressing or last for more than a couple of weeks. A trained counsellor such as Margaret McDonald can help treat the symptoms and recognise the underlying cause. Margaret can teach you relaxation techniques, ways to confront the distressing memories safely and diffuse them.
