Phobias

Phobias are an anxiety reaction to a specific trigger. And that trigger could be anything! People have reported phobias from buttons to heights, animals to water. Individuals may encounter their trigger as benignly as on the television and still have a reaction to that trigger. A phobic reaction typically is sweating palms, pounding heart, nausea, hot and cold flushes and the urge to avoid the trigger at all costs. Many phobias while irrational and annoying do not interfere with day to day life, however when they start affecting the individuals family or work life, then it’s time for treatment.

Phobias can be treated a number of ways. Desensitisation, where the individual is exposed to the trigger gradually in a safe environment has been shown to give excellent results. Other treatments include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, relaxation techniques and hypnotherapy.
