Abuse manifests in many different forms and can happen to anyone regardless of age or gender. Although women and children are the most frequently effected, men also can be victims of abuse.
Sexual abuse occurs when someone is forced to have sex, forced to watch others have sex, is sexually harassed, or has sex used to control them. Physical abuse is the one we are most familiar with – any kind of violence used to control another. Verbal abuse presents as insults, put downs or using loud and threatening language. All of these variations of abuse end in the same result – the attempt of one person trying to control another. Ongoing abuse can lead to a decrease in self-esteem, physical injuries and ongoing emotional trauma.
